Production of explosive/toxic gas filled vials

A laser spectroscopy company required glass vials filled with either toxic or explosive gases. These were currently manufactured by a US company which charged £250 per vial and had significant lead times as well as minimum orders. My instructions where to bring the cost down and develop an automated process to solve this issue.

The solution was a robotic jig, the only type of its kind in the world and it can be seen operating In the video below. The cost per vial was brought down to £0.66, and the system had the added advantage of being able to product any type of vial within minutes of it being requested giving the company unparalled flexibility and speed of research giving it a significant advantage against its competitors. The company and machine was sold for $18M. Below you can see the sealing process in operation
